This Month's Success Story -

Life may take us into the Valley
In August of 1992, after eighteen years, my marriage crumbled under the weight of extreme stress, and with three daughters in tow, I fled to a women’s shelter in Canoga Park. As a single mother for six years, I acquired a core belief that no matter how trapped one feels, there are always two alternatives. One is to quit, give up, and feel victimized. The other is to open one’s heart, mind and soul to the wisdom that is in our universe, and to believe that there are choices available in every circumstance. Whenever I feel “trapped”, I brainstorm and write down a minimum of five different approaches, and then narrow down to one or two to address my circumstances.

Never lose faith
Along the journey, again and again, I discovered the value of asking for help. I am convinced, that no matter how lonely I feel, I am never alone. The universe is a tapestry and you and I are inextricably woven together as part of that fabric. There were key people who truly helped me on my journey. From the author Stephen Covey, I mastered setting and keeping goals, and writing personal and business mission statements. Key principles such as “First things first” and “Seek to understand before you seek to be understood” became powerful mantras to stay on focus. Business coach Chris McCluskey taught me to “Say no to the good, so you can say yes to the best.”

The Miracle of Healing in Relationship
Harville Hendrix’s Imago Relationship Theory and therapy was foundational in overcoming my fear of intimate relationships, as well as my fear of a flourishing career. Practicing the steps of the Couples Dialogue again and again allowed my second husband and me to grow a conscious, intentional love relationship. Theo and I infuse our marriage with numerous Caring Behaviors, and small, daily rituals that say “I cherish you!” The power of these Imago skills to create connection compelled me to re-sculpt my business practice. Under the brilliant mentorship of Hedy and Yumi Schleifer, who walk every step of their talk, I am emerging as a remarkably capable facilitator of healing and growth for couples.

I now recognize all the memorable mentors and friends that accompanied my climb out of despair. Like Pastor Fred, who encouraged me to see myself as Christ did, through “resurrection eyes”, urging me to see myself with Christ’s compassion, rather than my own excoriating contempt. My colleague Tanya who insisted that, though I doubted myself, I owed it to myself and my children to step out of my comfort zone into business opportunities that would broaden my skills and exposure. There was my supervisor Tom, who taught me to hone a hearty sense of humor. With Dee, I was schooled in the art of co- leading an organization, including hiring, supervising and firing staff.

Live on Purpose
Regularly reserving quiet times for myself, is a valuable way to reconnect with my sense of purpose and to align with God’s direction for my life. Setting SMART* goals and objectives helps direct my daily activities, so that I move almost effortlessly forward toward living my dreams. Resilience allows me to be interrupted without losing my way, because life has a way of showing up just when I am deeply involved with something else. Today, I incorporate and integrate every bit of my life experience into my practice. I am supremely grateful for all those whose wisdom has assisted me in becoming the owner of my successful business, A Better Way Counseling.

Maximizing Workspace Efficiency

1. Keep important papers & equipment within reach. Your phone, computer, filling cabinet, fax & printer should be within reach if you use them frequently.

2. Clear your desk of non-essential items. Photos, quotes, etc. are great if they motivate and encourage you.

3. Post a calendar within view.

4. Establish a filling system. Color code like files together. For example: red-clients, blue-marketing, green-financial.

5. Use stacking file trays or file sorters on your desktop to prioritize files and tasks.

6. Tidy your desk at the end of the day. Everything back in its place. Also, jot down your "to-do" list for the next day. This way you can hit the ground running!

Lastly, I would like to encourage you that organization is not "one size fits all". I encourage my clients to find what works best for them and use it consistently.
