Special Tips for Networking for Business
Success!
If working a room is so much fun and so
profitable why do our hearts thump, our palms sweat, and we
feel nervous when we think about it? When we get invited to a
meeting, conference, mixer, or a party we tend to gravitate
towards what is comfortable (like an old pair of slippers)
such as business associates, friends, and people we know from
the community.
Here are some special tips to help
improve your networking opportunities, establish new
connections, and help you to achieve business success:
Business and Community Dinners and Events •
At dinners, the real networking takes place 30-60 minutes
before dinner while everyone is mingling - make it a point to
arrive early. • Do research on the event: know the who,
what, where, and when. • Circulate - Limit yourself to 10
minutes with an individual and try to meet at least 3 new
prospects. • Avoid leaving while the event is still in
progress • Follow-up with all contacts in a timely manner
Expos and Fairs • Arrive 15 minutes before
your scheduled shift • Never leave the booth unattended
• Avoid eating at the booth • You are encouraged to
circulate at the event, but not during your scheduled shift
• Come prepared with the product/service you would most
like to promote at the event • Be sure to follow-up with
all leads as soon as possible
Mixers and
Receptions • Be one of the first guests-this is
usually a smaller group with greater possibility for
networking • Leave your hands free and avoid eating at the
event • Circulate, don’t get too attached to one guest
• Avoid extended conversations with co- workers and
personal friends • Feel free to schedule follow-up
conversations at the event
For all of the above
• Always be prepared with plenty of business cards
• If you have committed to attend an event and an
emergency arises, it is important to communicate to the host
that you will not be able to make it. In this case, also be
prepared to provide names of other guests or business
associates that could represent you and/or your business.
• Be sure to provide feedback on the event to the host.
This feedback should include specifics on the business
opportunity at the event, the number of prospects encountered,
the benefits to the event, and most importantly, your opinion
on continued support of the event. • Perfect your
“Elevator Speech” – Who you are, what the name of your
business is, and your business slogan. Repetition and
consistency do work! • Don’t forget to smile and have fun!

Brrrrrrrr! It has been cold here in
Southern California and across the United States! In case we
had forgotten that it was still winter, Mother Nature has
given us quite a reminder.
Winter has also ushered in
The Winter Olympics and the opportunity to admire and root for
your favorite and talented contenders. I find it extremely
motivational to watch the Olympians and become inspired by
their dedication, tenacity and focus on success. Their lives
have been dedicated to their craft in a way that most of us
will never experience.
However, I must contemplate
what would our businesses be like with that kind of
dedication, tenacity and focus on success? An Olympian has
such a high level of laser focus and their mind is trained to
see the Gold Medal--not the Silver or the Bronze--the Gold
medal! What is your Gold Medal? Success is defined differently
by everyone, so your Gold Medal will be different from mine.
For a moment, think about your Gold Medal Achievement.
What would it feel like to achieve it? How would it change
your life? Most importantly, think about what might be
stopping you from achieving your Gold Medal. Now imagine that
whatever that obstacle might be, you have the power to move it
aside, or go over it or through it. Wow!
This month, I
invite you to live your life and work your business as if
there are ZERO obstacles between you and your Gold Medal
Achievement. Focus like an Olympian and make your goal a
reality!

Make Your
Dream A Reality |
|
A couple of weeks ago, one of my best
friend’s in the world, Poco, passed away. As you might have
guessed by his name, he was a furry friend and not a human
friend. I rarely write about animals, although I am a huge
animal lover, but Poco’s life was just too amazing to let him
pass without celebrating his little spirit.
Poco came
into my life in 1998 after an excursion to Mexico with my
husband, brother and Sister-in-law. We were standing in line,
waiting to be let back across the border into the United
States, when we saw this tiny ball of fur running past this
long line of people. The tiny puppy was cruising, and I mean
cruising, past everyone in line headed toward the United
States. I remember looking at my husband and saying, “He’s
going to make it across the border and no one is going to stop
him!” Low and behold, when we walked across the border twenty
minutes later, he was just being scooped up into the arms of a
Border Patrol person. The man’s eyes met mine and he looked
down at the puppy and said, “I am going to put him down and he
will probably be killed on the street.” In what I can only
describe as slow motion, my arms reached out to this man and
found this tiny puppy safely in my arms. He was only about
eight weeks old, but I am telling you that he was on a mission
and knew where he was going.
As the story goes, I
could not keep Poco at the time because of the apartment I was
living in, so my Sister-in-law and Brother adopted him. Poco
became a resident of Wisconsin and later Minnesota. I have
heard so many humorous stories about Poco that I have lost
track of them over the years. However, I will say that Poco
was always determined to reach his goals, whether it was
living in the United States of America, or just being free to
do the fun loving things that he enjoyed doing. I smile as I
write this because no goal was EVER too large for Poco and his
sense of humor was unending! I am positive that dog always had
a smile on his face.
Poco was hit by a car when he
passed. Even in his passing, he was out seeing the world,
living his dreams and loving life. If Poco, at eight weeks
old, could run to the United States, then I am certain there
are no goals in 2006 that are too large for any of us. In the
spirit of Poco, my wish for you this year is the courage to
say yes to your great goal and to risk making your dream a
reality.
Action Item: What is
your big dream? What do you need to do to make it a reality?
Do you need support? I would encourage each one of you to
write your dream down on a paper. Then, next to it, write the
date in which you would like to achieve your goal. Finally,
break it down into “baby steps”. How does your goal look now?
Achievable? Now, take that first step and don’t look
back! |
