intention

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2007! At the beginning of 2006, I shared that my theme for the year was focus. I have to tell you, I really felt that it WAS a year of focus and that I was able to achieve many of the goals that I set out to achieve. Throughout the holidays I kept asking myself, “What’s my theme for this year”? Many words came up for me, but the one that really radiated was, “INTENTION”! Having just wrote, “Selling with Intention” I know the importance of being intentional in my life and in my business. I consistently coach my clients on being intentional, so I just knew that it was the word of the year! When we are intentional, it means that we are able to choose the results that we want ahead of time! WOW! Check out our 90-Day Selling with Intention Challenge later in the newsletter!

What is your theme this year (feel free to use the intentional theme!)? Take a moment and imagine that it’s the end of 2007 and you have achieved all of your goals for the year. In your mind, look back on 2007 and notice everything that occurred. What do you see? What has happened? Is there a word that stands out for you?

Remember, 2007 can be whatever you want it to be and no goal is too great! Anything is possible when you first see your goal, trust that it will happen and then allow the right people and opportunities to show up.

Wishing you a 2007 filled with intentional dreams and goals fulfilled!

This Month's Success Story -

I have always felt that I was meant to work for myself. I grew up watching my father run his own contractor business. Though I knew it took a lot of risk, watching him create success with his business always inspired me. The thought of my own success being limited only by how hard I worked and how creative I could be was too much to ignore.

When my wife and I moved from the Central Coast to Southern California, I decided to start my own consulting business out of the home office. In retrospect, it would have been wiser to spend more time planning before starting but I was too eager to take on the world to wait.

Living in a new area where I didn’t know anyone, it was difficult finding steady work. The little bit of money we had in savings was drying up quickly. About 2 months after starting the business, I realized that I better start seeking professional advice or go out and get a “real job.” I found a marketing coach through the local Chamber of Commerce website and discovered how truly helpful a good business coach can be. Not only did she bring order to the chaos that was my business, but she referred me to some of her contacts that became clients.

Eventually, I got busy enough to justify subleasing office space with a local company offering complementary services. It was a great synergistic relationship that ended up bringing me a project. The project was large and it allowed me to replace all of the money I had borrowed from savings. It was our first “big break!”

Today, we have our own office in Riverside and 2 employees in addition to myself. We have more than enough work to keep us busy and a number of loyal clients that we have been serving for almost 2 years – including the one that was our “big break.” The right coaching relationship has made a huge difference for us, both in terms of advice and the amazing networking opportunities that have come about as a result.

Probably the best advice I have received was from (big surprise) another wonderful coach. She said, “It’s not who you know and it’s not who knows you...it’s who knows your business!” Keeping that in mind has completely changed the way we do our marketing and networking. I would advise anyone considering an entrepreneurial venture to take that phrase to heart and seek advice and help from those who have been there. The people that have come into my life as a result of my company have by far been the best part of owning my own business.

Intentional Tax Prep!

I know the New Year has barely begun, but wouldn’t you like to make doing your taxes a less “taxing” event? Here are some suggestions for being intentional about preparing for tax time.

1) Get all your receipts in one central location. According files work great, as do envelopes, and hanging files. What ever you choose make sure you label with the appropriate categories you will need.
2) Sort receipts by category. For example: meals, travel, office supplies, advertising, medical expenses, childcare, 1099’s, 1098, etc.
3) Review your credit card statements for any missing receipts and try to obtain a copy.
4) Now that you are organized, make sure to file any statements that come in the mail over next couple of months.
These simple steps should alleviate the frantic search for paperwork at the last minute.

By the way, you don’t have to set aside an entire day to do this. Breaking the job into small segments works just as well. Set a timer for 15 minutes and make some progress!
