Greetings! Was January an intentional month for you? I sure hope so!

Technology. The word inspires some and frightens others. Yet, to do business efficiently and intentionally today, our businesses need the latest technology. Podcasts, blogs, internet marketing, teleconference...they can all take your business to an entirely new level if you know how to use them.

But we’re all busy, right? So, how can we find the time to get plugged into the technology we need to make our businesses successful? The key is to schedule the time in your calendar. Block out time to do the research and make the connections with the people who can help you. Marcy Decato, Creative Solutions, creates fantastic web-sites and blogs and I highly recommend her because she will break things down into straightforward language for you (check out her website). I’m also pleased to introduce you to this month’s inspiration, Cynthia Frazier, an internet guru who can help you understand how virtual your business can become in 2007!

Visualize yourself at the end of 2007. Imagine that you have met all of your technology goals. What would be different in your business? More clients? More free time?

Wishing you all a fantastic February and the right technology to change your business!

In Support,

Ursula Mentjes, M.S., ACC

This Month's Success Story -

The road to entrepreneurship for me has been a winding curvaceous bumpy road that twists through 25 years of preparation. Since before my high school days, I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I took business classes in high school. I talked about having my own business with everyone who would listen. Yet, as a baby boomer, I was encouraged to “get a good education” so that I could “get a good job” so that I could “have a nice retirement.” I was also encouraged to get married and focus on my family.

With my heart set on owning a business, I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. I had drive and determination. I also wanted my family and friends to be proud of me. So I selected Human Resources Management as a concentration. Those words were ringing in my ear. Get a good job. I also got married and turned my attention to being a wife and mother.

My years as a full time homemaker afforded me an opportunity to make many great accomplishments. I helped raise a lot of money for charity. I was one of the youngest women ever to be elected to the school board. I served on the board of directors for The American Red Cross, The Girl Scout Council, and The Salvation Army. What's more, I received many awards and certificates. I was recognized by the NAACP for outstanding leadership, and I received a resolution from the California State Senate for community service.

At forty I found myself divorced, no job, and no place to live. My heart was still set on having my own business “someday”, but those words still rang in my ear. “Get a good job.” Since I had been “out of circulation” for a while, I completed a masters in Instructional Technology and began teaching college part time. It didn’t take long to realize that I was not going to be satisfied with myself until I followed my dream. I took everything I had and opened a franchise. My business was successful, but not successful enough to remain open. During that experience, I learned a lot about myself. But more importantly, I learned a lot about the market and free enterprise.

Giving up was never an option for me. I read John Maxwell’s book Failing Forward, which forever changed the way I look at failures. I also heard Dennis Kimbro say that the average millionaire tries 17 different businesses and goes bankrupt three times before finding success.

More determined than ever to succeed at entrepreneurship, I teamed up with my daughter to start a business services company that offers marketing and promotions campaigns. Our goal was to become the most sought after marketing company on the West Coast. Well, last year, we joined hundreds of thousands of women in the Count Me In campaign and declared a commitment to be a million- dollar woman business owner by the year 2010. At that time, we re-wrote our business plan and took our company online. Today, we are poised to be one of the most sought after Internet Marketing companies Internationally. Today, the words in my ear “Get a good job” have been replaced with Will Rogers’ words, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”
