What
are you grateful for? I mean, really, truly grateful
for?
It's
easy to think we are grateful for all of the people and
things in our lives, but are we? Really? The
reality is that we are so busy, we just don't take the
time to think of all of the things we have to be
grateful for. And I'm not talking about the "big
things".
My
best friend in college, Krissy, used to always say to
me, "Ursula, be grateful for the little things.
Otherwise, if you only look forward to the "big things"
in life, you will miss out on all of the miracles in the
moments." Her words were so profound that
years later I think about them almost every
day.
I
actually wrote those two paragraphs before the fires
started in Southern California . When I came back to it,
I was struck by what I was seeing in the media and all
of the things we truly do have to be grateful
for.
Chelsea
J. Carter of the Associated Press wrote about the Rancho
Bernardo residents. Specifically, she wrote about
Barbara Warden who lost her home. Carter wrote
that Barbara said she had a lot to be thankful
for. Specifically, no one in her family or
community had been hurt. The day before she had
been sifting through the ashes of her home and found a
sundial. Her husband had given her the sundial
which had been engraved, "Grow old along with me.
The best is yet to be." Carter quoted Warden as
saying, "That says it all, doesn't it? We have a lot to
be thankful for. We have each other."
It
is easy to get caught up in our goals and believe that
they are more important than the people or the small
miracles that happen every single day. I encourage
you to take the time to be "in the now" and pay
attention to the details of your day--you can't help but
be grateful! And, be sure to take the time to
thank the people who support you every day so you can do
what you do so brilliantly!
Action:
- Make
a list of all of the "little things" and moments you
are grateful for each day
- Take
time to stop and notice the small miracles and special
moments that are always happening
- Commit
to doing this for 90 day... and see what happens!
My
thoughts go out to all of those who have been impacted
by the fires. Let us all remember them as we move
into the holiday season.
In Support,
Ursula

| Promoting Yourself & Your
Business |
By Hank Jordan
Much has been said about how to sell, how
to improve yourself psychologically, how to achieve
"success" - but how about some practical, pragmatic
guidelines about how to promote yourself
and your business.
Promotion means advancing from where you are to
the next step.
Promotion also implies measurement of how you are
doing along your path toward graduation.
The First Exposure
When you first meet a person face-to-face,
you are given a marvelous opportunity to make an
impression and leave a 3D memory. There are many
articles and seminars about what to do in this
situation, including hints and advice about networking,
how to get your sales message across in 17 seconds or 30
seconds, etc.
Many times you are told that you need to build a
relationship (but you know that instinctively, don't
you?).
More often, your first exposure is
achieved through the printed word or a display on the
computer monitor.
Again, countless books, ads, and DVDs abound
advising you how to produce a better website, how to
advertise, do's and don'ts about copy writing,
suggestions about publicity and getting the word out
about yourself and your business.
What you really need is a winning formula
that outlines what do to AFTER that important first
exposure.
After the First Exposure
When you meet someone at a crowded
networking event, or other function, remember that they
are also meeting a lot of other people. Our mind works
on the principle of LIFO (an often-used term meaning
Last In, First Out). We tend to
remember best the person or event that we last
encountered.
This obvious fact is ignored by many well-meaning
business people.
Just because you (the sellor)
remember them (the sellee), does not mean
that they remember you.
Think back to school days. Remember how
certain things were repeated, over and over again.
There's a reason for this. Educators know
that repetition is among the best ways to teach. It's the way our
brain works - if you stimulate it over and over again,
it remembers.
If you flash an image or a message very briefly,
the brain tends to put it aside very quickly to make
room for new inputs. But if you
present the message many times, the brain responds with
"Oh, this is important to remember, not just a fleeting
happenstance."
Why
not take advantage of this tendency of the brain? Why not
stimulate your customers, prospects and suspects over
and over again until they literally cannot get your
message out of their mind? Of course, you
don't want to pound so hard that you create an
offensive
negative image. Achieving the
proper balance is the tricky part.
The Simple Formula
The
formula for assuring that they will remember you is
deceptively simple - it consists of two elements:
FOLLOWUP and FOLLOWTHROUGH.
The
question is exactly how to follow-up and how to
follow-through.
There is a difference between the two. In a nutshell,
follow-up means sending them a reminder of you right
away, soon after the first exposure, whereas
follow-through means repeating your message over and
over and over again, each time including a new fact or
teaser or benefit.
The
important thing to remember is that it is essential to
follow-up and follow-through in order to get
promoted.
My next article will tell you just how to do
so. If you

| Get Inspired |
When thinking about my 'success' story I
wondered, "What do others see or define as my
success"? My most evident success might be the
founding and developing of a commercial landscape
maintenance company that began with two employees, one
truck and two properties. This company grew
quickly and successfully and within 5 years the company
earned a multi million dollar gross revenue, operated in
four states and received the "Greater Phoenix Chamber of
Commerce" 2004 Small Business Persons of the Year award
for Innovation.
While creating and developing the business
was an extremely satisfying and overt accomplishment, I
personally would describe my greatest success (thus
far) as having created a lifestyle that includes
strong family values, financial freedom, and a highly
stimulating environment of continual learning. I also
enjoy connecting with an eclectic, ever expanding number
of positive, productive and phenomenal people.
Collectively, this impacts my overall business success.
I step back to reflect, "How did I get to
this place"? My success today is a culmination of
choices and experiences. These experiences and choices
have formed my perceptions and attitudes toward life,
money and work which I in turn have transported me to
this moment in time. I grew up on a traditional
farm with conservative parents. Growing up on the
farm I learned that work is an integral part of
life. With the right focus, they can integrate
beautifully
together.
In adulthood, I had an epiphany about
money. For a long time I had believed that there
wasn't enough money. And then a light bulb went on
for me. I realized that all of the money I had had in my
life had brought me to the present moment, so I had
obviously had more than enough money because I had made
it to that moment. It was my perception that was
limiting. Since the day of my epiphany, I let go
of fear of not having enough money and my abundance has
increased significantly. This new belief led to
even more success in our business. I believe this
is abundant thinking!
One thing I know for sure is that this is
a great country to be in business in and because of
that, everything is possible! Our second year in
business we doubled our initial gross revenue of
$250,000 to $600,000. The third year in business
we topped a million and doubled our revenue again ($1.3
mil) My husband stated it wasn't feasible to think we
could double our revenue again the next year. I
responded that I would not think in limited terms and
once again we doubled our revenue!!
I feel some resistance to defining myself
as having arrived at a place of success, because in my
mind, I have only just begun. I continue to live
and learn!

| Appreciation |
As
Ursula wrote in her article, we should take time out of
our day and make that list of the little things for
which we are grateful and we need to be thankful for the
special miracles in our lives.
In addition, we shouldn't ever take for granted the
people in our lives. Whether personal friends, family,
or our business colleagues, clients and customers. Each
person has an impact on who you are and what you
do. Each person is a gift and we should cherish
our relationships with all of them.
With Thanksgiving coming upon us, why not take this
opportunity to acknowledge the people in your life. Let
your clients know that you value their business by
sending a "thank you for being such a great
customer" card or gift. It need not be expensive or
elaborate....it just needs to say, "Thank You".
Do this throughout the year as well. Unexpected
thank you's are always nice to receive, and
your customers will truly feel appreciated and
valued.
