Do you ever feel like giving up?
I recently spoke at the Unleashing The Diva Conference in Carlsbad. Wow! What a phenomenal and inspiring event! One of the speakers said that this was going to be the year of the turnaround for many people in the world. Was she speaking to you?

I often tell my clients that if being in business or sales was easy, everyone would do it! It CAN be easy when you get out of your own way and start to “allow” your business to unfold rather than “force it”. So many times we are holding on so tight, our knuckles are white and we are wondering where our next deal is coming from. Relax! Take a break, get away and refocus on what it is that you really want in your business and life. And then, from a positive mindset and starting point, the right opportunities will come along and the best doors will be opened for you.

If you have ever felt like giving up I am certain you will enjoy this month’s success story by Don Martinez. Don’s story is inspiring because he had every reason in the world to give up, but he didn’t! He hung in there, stayed focus, and allowed the doors to be opened.

If you are feeling like giving up on your dream, please call or e-mail me or someone else who can support you! Dreams are precious. . . don’t ever give up on yours.

This Month's Success Story -

The Road to Success: One Step at a Time

Entrepreneurial success did not happen overnight for me. Like many of us today, business is a process of change and flexibility. My story of entrepreneurship began at a young age when my sister was a girl scout. I had no problem knocking on doors asking our neighbors and strangers to buy cookies. I was just twelve years old at the time. This was my first experience in business and I was hooked!

My story and road to success hits home for many who recognize that the spirit of entrepreneurship can begin at a young age. In college I studied engineering and landed my first “adult” job in that field. Five years into my career I found myself faced with a major obstacle. I was laid off from my job. At the time I had a close friend that worked for an employment agency and asked if I would like to give recruiting a try. She thought that it might be something I would be good at because I enjoyed connecting and talking with people. I noticed that her life style appeared to be pretty good, so I assumed that I might be able to do well financially in the recruiting industry. Unfortunately, they were not hiring.

However, I did not give up. Yet, after being turned down by 39 agencies who said I did not have the right experience to be hired, I started feeling very discouraged. I began having thoughts of giving up on this new dream. Just as I was thinking of letting my dream go, I received a call from one more agency. They said they would be interested in interviewing me. After the interview the manager said he had a few more people to talk to and that he would make his selection by the end of the week. A few days later I was called by the agent telling me he liked me, but unfortunately, he was going to go with someone who had more experience in the business. This was now my 40th interview and I was rejected once again.

As the gentlemen continued to talk he stated he had two friends in South Orange County who were looking for a research person and might be interested in talking to me. Since he had already set up the interview, I decided to go. To my surprise it was an opportunity that I could not turn down! Although it was 100% commission, I was really intrigued by the opportunity. The partners told me that I would either eat or starve in this business. At this point I felt I had nothing to lose, so I took the job. With a hand shake I was ushered into the world of recruiting.

Then I was welcomed to the school of hard knocks! I worked for this firm for 18 months before the company decided to close their doors. Eventually I went to work in the corporate world as an in house recruiter and realized how much I enjoyed the business. And then it happened! In 1998 I decided I was going to start my own business. Eight years later I am happy to report that we are still in business. Today I’m the founder and Sr. Managing Partner with the Domar Group www.domargroup.com. Our services cover all of North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. We have an office in Southern California, one in Atlanta and soon to be opening an office in Virginia. Our clients include; The Walt Disney Company, 20th Century fox, Microsoft, Smithsonian, and AOL time Warner and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

My strong desire and passion to stay focused and not give up lead me to found my own business. Thinking back, I realized the one person that was a big inspiration to me was my fifth grade teacher. She gave us two golden nuggets: 1) We could be anything we wanted to be if we tried, and 2) To remember to always finish what we started. I have never forgotten her words of wisdom.

Asking for help when we need it is critical to small business success. It’s human nature for a business owner to do it all. However, don’t be afraid to ask for help. When hiring, don’t act in desperation. Instead, get to know the people you hire. As an HR consultant I find that many small business owners don’t take the time to understand the risks involved with hiring. I teach them to be careful because a troubled employee can change the one thing you dreamed of. Your successful business. Hire smart.

I recently finished writing my new book, The Art of Business. It will be available this summer. In the book, I discuss several important topics in the area of entrepreneurship. First, entrepreneurship is not a 9-5 job and making the investment in “U” will make a difference in your business. Second, it is hunger and appetite to want more then you have that will continue to propel you forward when you want to give up. And no matter what, always believe in yourself.

-The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.

-Success is infectious so surround yourself with people who are like minded.

family
The role of women has changed greatly from previous decades. Sixty years ago, women stayed home, cared for the children, cleaned the house, cooked all the meals, attended PTA meetings and in general took care of the household. That was the norm in our mother’s and grandmother’s day.

Fast forward to 2007 and the stay at home mom is rare. Women have taken on the role of “bread winner”. Women are now presidents & CEO’s of large companies. They are doctors, lawyers, dentists. They are even business owners, running every aspect of the business and overseeing its growth and success. The stress levels are tremendous.

On the flip side, many husbands have assumed the role of “Mr. Mom”. Increasingly, men are taking care of running the household on a full time basis because their wife actually brings in a higher income. For some men, it’s a welcome change. For others, it’s been a struggle. Although the stress of the daily madness of fighting traffic, meeting deadlines, securing new clients is now out of their lives, there lies a new source of stress. Now their priorities are getting the kids ready for school, cleaning, laundry, homework, doctor visits, soccer practice, dance class, etc. The stress of this new role can affect everyone in the family.

When stress is not relieved, it could affect your health. Stress increases blood pressure, depression, heart disease, and more. In reality, it is nearly impossible to eliminate stress from your life, but here are a few tips for today’s overcommitted women and men:

• Prioritize: Make a list of what needs to be done, when it needs to be done by and the importance of the task. Decide which needs immediate attention, which can be delegated and which task can be put on the back burner.
• Keep reality in sight: If you’re kitchen floor isn’t clean enough to eat off of, who cares! Don’t hang onto the “Mrs. Clever” or “Father Knows Best” kind of thinking.
• Don’t over-schedule: Your kids don’t need to participate in every sport/activity on the planet. Let them chose which activity they enjoy the most. Over- scheduling can add stress to your children as well.
• Communication: Connect with your spouse and your kids. Open lines of communication are important to keep everyone on the same page. Everyone should know what his or her jobs are within the family structure.
• Eat right and exercise: This gives you the energy to tackle any task.
• Get enough sleep: American’s do not get enough sleep. This weakens your defenses and that’s bad for your health.
